1925: NO WONDER THEY CALLED US APPLIANCE OPERATORS!

WHEN I ENTERED THE HAM FRATERNITY BACK IN THE EARLY 1970'S, ONE OF THE MORE COMMON THINGS THAT I HEARD FROM THOSE VETERAN HAMS FROM THE 20'S AND 30'S WAS THAT WE NEWCOMERS WERE "APPLIANCE OPERATORS" AND DON'T YOU KNOW? THEY WERE RIGHT! CAN YOU IMAGINE BEING ABLE TO JOURNEY BACK TO THE YEAR 1925 AND USHER ONE OF THOSE VETERANS INTO A SHACK WITH A TWO THOUSAND DOLLAR KENWOOD HF RIG? HE'D PROBABLY ASK "WHERE'S THE COIL?" A POCKET SIZED 2 METER HT WOULD FIT IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND.
